BOLA AHMED TINUBU: A CAPITALIST LEADER (Part 2)

A capitalist is a proponent of the economic system known as capitalism and views it as a solution.

Capitalism permits companies to enter the market and manufacture goods without any limits on the quantity they can produce or the profit they can earn. Since the relationship between buyers and sellers is such that buyers require goods while sellers require profits. Capitalism provides unrestricted access to those who desire to sell their products, while buyers are free to choose from a wide range of sellers.

In a government setting, capitalism entails delegating the responsibility of providing for citizens’ needs to companies or entrepreneurs who can meet those needs. For example, providing electricity in Nigeria is challenging due to economic conditions and Nigerians attitudes. The government lacks the funds to generate electricity, and even if they could, there are many hurdles that could prevent it from being used only for electricity generation. Nigerians also have a mentality of wanting to benefit from government-provided services for free, including electricity. Therefore, capitalism in this scenario would entail the government inviting companies, both foreign and local, to provide electricity.

The governor of Kano, for instance, could offer Dangote the opportunity to provide electricity in exchange for payment for a specified duration. Dangote would utilize his resources to generate electricity, and the people of Kano would be required to pay for it since it is owned by the company. If Dangote’s investment is insufficient to produce enough electricity, the government can give other companies the opportunity to provide their own electricity. The people of Kano can choose which company to use, and the companies compete with one another to provide steady and low-cost electricity. The government can then allocate the funds earmarked for electricity towards job creation and entrepreneurial capital. In essence, capitalism allows private companies to provide what citizens require instead of the government providing it for them.

Capitalists believe that if something is required, those who possess the resources to generate it should do so, even if the government cannot. Capitalism is exemplified in the way Bola Ahmed Tinubu governs Lagos since he believes that competent individuals, regardless of their ethnicity or political affiliation, should be given the opportunity to excel.

In the realm of education, capitalism means that every university is autonomous and must find the funds to sustain itself without relying on the government for everything. Schools are allowed to set their own tuition fees, and this creates competition among institutions in terms of affordability and quality education. The government can continue to provide student loans, while schools can expand their income streams by offering ways to generate revenue for themselves.
